a few FAQs about block printing

What is Hand Block Printing? Hand block printing is a traditional textile printing technique where carved wooden blocks are dipped in paint, dye, or ink and stamped by hand onto fabric. The blocks are carefully aligned to create repeated patterns, making each piece unique and often giving it a handmade, artisanal character.

Tell me about your Hand Block Printed creations. My block-printed textiles feature nature-inspired motifs, particularly water, trees, animals, and other organic forms created by hand-carving and stamping designs onto organic textiles. The subtle variations in each impression reflect the handmade process and give every piece its own character. My creative process is intuitive, slow, and meditative, deeply inspired by the rhythms and interconnectedness of the natural world. I work with earthy colors to create tactile surfaces and flowing forms reminiscent of water, earth, roots, tidal pools, and woodland landscapes. Through hand block printing and other fiber techniques, I explore the quiet beauty of nature and the connection between organic forms, materials, and the human hand.

What inspires your Hand Block Prints? My hand block prints begin with a fascination for the patterns, textures, and rhythms that emerge in the natural world. I look for the quiet details found in tree bark, branching roots, leaves, water, and shifting organic forms, transforming these observations into designs for cloth. Working intuitively with natural materials and earthy colors, I create many prints that evoke the textures of earth, the movement of water, and the branching forms of roots and trees. The slow, meditative process of hand printing allows me to connect with these natural rhythms and translate them into textiles that feel organic, tactile, and grounded.

Are your Hand Block Print Textiles one-of-a-kind? Yes, each of my hand block printed textiles has a unique character because it is printed by hand, one impression at a time. While a design or motif may be repeated, variations in pressure, ink, color, and placement make each piece distinct. I embrace these subtle differences as part of the beauty of the handmade process, so no two textiles are ever exactly alike.
